Jordan Peele has a new movie called Nope opening this week which is one of several films the director has worked on that could lead to Get Out 2.
Oscar-winning screenwriter for 2017’s horror film, Get Out, Jordan Peele, isn’t resting on his laurels any time soon. The acclaimed filmmaker has a lot to say and said quite a bit with his intriguing 2019 movie, Us. That movie challenged audiences almost as much as Get Out did. This week, the momentum continues with a movie that is getting loud preliminary buzz called Nope. Of course, inquiring minds want to ask: “Hey Jordan, how about a Get Out sequel?”
Horror movies come and go. Some are better than others but when Peele made Get Out, it resonated with viewers to the tune of a $176 million domestic box-office gross. And also, guess what? Audiences loved it so much that they gave it the rare thing a horror movie receives nowadays: an “A-” CinemaScore grade. With the more ambiguous and ambitious Us, however, Peele took risks that didn’t resonate quite as strongly with everyone. Us got just a “B” CinemaScore grade but it still earned $175 million domestically proving people are coming back to see what he is putting out whether they love it or not.
Nope is a commercial prospect that stands a decent chance of topping $200 million domestically in a summer that is eagerly awaiting a thinking person’s horror movie like this picture promises it will be. “Social thrillers” are Peele’s thing. Peele, in fact, has not ruled out a sequel to his wildly popular, Get Out. Peele believes one should “never say never” and that there is more left “to talk about.”
Us, unlike Get Out, got snubbed for an Oscar nod for its principal star. Lupita Nyong’o gave one of the best turns of her career but didn’t get an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the 2019 picture. At this point, Nope doesn’t seem likely to land any major Oscar nominations but that’s only because the reviews aren’t out quite yet. It’s still possible the movie will have what it takes to land Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya another nod. We just don’t know, exactly, which stars of the film will be stealing the show at this particular point. But, we’ll know soon enough! How about another screenwriting nod for Peele? Could it happen? Stranger things have definitely came into frutition.
