The television industry loves its acronyms, and FAST (free, ad-supported, streaming TV) is the latest buzzy one. It refers not just to streaming video services, but to those that deliver broadcast-style linear channels: more about tuning in than watching on-demand.
The reason we’re telling you this is because Warner Music Group has just launched three new FAST channels focused on music. It’s working with hardware firm Roku, whose The Roku Channel FAST service claims to reach around 80 million people in the UK alone.
Warner Music’s WMX division is responsible for the new channels: WMX Pop, WMX Rock and WMX Hip-Hop. They’ll feature music videos and concert recordings, as well as shows made within the WMG group by Uproxx, HipHopDX, Songkick, Cover Nation, The Pit and Lasso Nation.
That’s one of the interesting things about this announcement: FAST TV as a place where WMG’s growing content-production businesses can find an outlet.
